What is Fiberoptic Endoscopic
Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES)?
Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) is a
gold‑standard, instrumental assessment used daily in hospitals
and rehabilitation settings to evaluate swallowing function.

Unlike traditional videofluoroscopic studies (MBSS/VFSS),
FEES uses a flexible endoscope to visualize the pharynx and larynx
in real time—no radiation or barium required.
How Mobile FEES Works:
-
Bedside Convenience: We bring FEES directly to your facility—resident room, wheelchair, lounge, or dining table—within 1–3 days of referral.
-
Safe & Comfortable: A thin, flexible endoscope is passed transnasally with minimal discomfort and no need for radiation exposure.
-
Quick & Flexible: The entire exam takes about 15 minutes. Residents can eat and drink their preferred foods and liquids for as long as needed.
-
Repeatable: Assessments can be repeated as often as necessary to monitor progress or re‑evaluate swallowing function.

Key Benefits of FEES in Your Facility
1. Cost Effective
-
Reduced Fees: Mobile FEES typically cuts per‑patient costs by 40–50% compared with hospital‑based MBSS/VFSS.
-
No Transport Costs: Eliminates the need for costly, time‑consuming transfers to imaging departments.
2. Evidence-Based
-
Silent Aspiration Detection: Rapidly identifies silent aspiration and pharyngeal residue.
-
Immediate Interventions: Enables on‑the‑spot diet modifications and compensatory strategy training.
-
Staff Education: Provides hands‑on training for nursing teams in secretion management and safe feeding techniques.
-
Early Complication Identification: Flags reflux, fatigue, and other post‑swallow risks, facilitating timely ENT referrals and preventive care to reduce aspiration pneumonia.
3. Rapid Results
-
Fast Turnaround: On‑site evaluations typically scheduled within 1–3 days of referral.
-
Timely Reporting: Comprehensive assessment reports typically delivered within 24–48 hours.
